Description:
Large, dark and uniform colored typical thrush, very similar to commonly found Tibetan Blackbird. Male is entirely black, with yellow bill and eyering, blackish legs. Female is dull dark brown, paler and vaguely brown-mottled below, with buff-brown submoustachial stripe and throat divided by indistinct malar.
Distribution:
Vagrant or rare winter visitor to extreme northwestern parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, mainly Hunza and Ghizer. Inhabits relatively open broadleaf, coniferous, mixed and deciduous forests; also plantations, orchards and farmland with vegetation cover, reaches up to 2700 m.
Behavior:
Forages mainly on ground, by turning leaf litter and uprooting moss with the bill. Listening and watching for prey, then stabbing or digging at ground to secure it. Commonly feeds also in trees and bushes. Mainly feeds on invertebrates, mainly earthworms and insects and their larvae, also fruits and seeds; highly flexible and adaptive.
